Counseling Students

Masters Practicum & Internship

How They Serve You

Working with a counseling student at EdYouth Foundation means working with a graduate-level counselor in training whose every session is actively supported by our doctoral-level, licensed counseling supervisor. Dr. Lewis is more directly involved in the cases of counseling students than any other tier, reviewing their work closely, guiding their clinical decisions, and in some cases participating in sessions to ensure the best training and highest quality of care.

Counseling students bring something unique to the therapeutic relationship: they are at the most formative and exciting stage of their counseling journey. They have chosen this work intentionally, they are deeply invested in the clients they serve, and they are supported at every step by experienced clinical oversight.  Our clients who are seeing counseling students can expect to have Dr. Lewis easily accessible to them if there are ever any concerns or a need for more experienced input into their treatment.

Who They Are

Our Graduate practicum and Internship students are masters level Counseling students at the end of their graduate degree program in counseling or a closely related field. They are completing their required practicum or internship hours: the final requirement for completing their masters degree, involving a supervised clinical residency practicing as a mental health provider.

To be considered for a position at EdYouth Foundation, graduate students must be enrolled in a graduate counseling program and demonstrate the character, commitment, and genuine heart for youth that defines our entire team. They are carefully selected, not just for where they are academically, but for who they are as people.

All counseling students at EdYouth Foundation practice under the direct clinical supervision of Dr. Felicia Lewis, PhD, LPC-S. Dr. Lewis is most closely involved with this tier of providers, ensuring that every client served by a counseling student benefits from her advanced clinical knowledge and oversight regardless of the student’s level of training.

Your Most Affordable Care

Counseling students are not yet licensed and are therefore not able to bill insurance plans of any kind. However, working with a counseling student is the most affordable way to receive professional-quality, clinically supervised mental health care at EdYouth Foundation for those without adequate insurance benefits.

Counseling students provide services at our lowest sliding scale rates, making them an excellent option for clients who:

  • Do not carry insurance or whose insurance is not accepted

  • Need affordable care while waiting to transition to a licensed provider

  • Qualify for our lowest rate tier based on financial need

Counseling students may also provide some services funded through outside sources such as workforce programs and grants, allowing qualifying clients to be served at little to no cost for a longer period through those funding streams. Visit our Affording Care page to learn more about our sliding scale rates.

For clients who need insurance billing, we encourage you to explore working with one of our LPC-Associates or fully licensed clinicians. Visit our Care pages for guidance on insurance based counseling.

Sahian Sanabria, BS, Nelson University Intern

Under Supervision of Dr. Felicia Lewis, PhD, LPC-S

Sahian is a graduate student pursuing her Master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Nelson University. Her journey into counseling has been shaped by diverse professional experiences that deepened her understanding of what it means to create safe, welcoming spaces and to support people through their most difficult moments.

Her background includes work as a Registered Behavior Technician, where she learned the importance of patience and empathy in behavioral work with children and families. As an Office Manager at a counseling practice, she witnessed firsthand how the details of a welcoming environment matter. Most recently, she has served as a Digital Rescue Partner Agent, providing compassionate support and intake assessment to individuals in emotionally distressing situations, work that reinforced her belief in the power of genuine connection and nonjudgmental listening.

In her clinical training, Sahian is developing skills in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), grounded in a person-centered approach. She is particularly drawn to working with young adults navigating anxiety, family and peer relationships, identity formation, self-esteem, and the impacts of shame.
